Sips, Sweets & Ancient Sights in Southern Sicily

See spectacular ruins & indulge in all things Sicilian — wine, chocolate, Baroque architecture & more — while staying at a chic hotel in magnificent Modica.

About Your Trip

Essentially separated from the rest of the island by the Hyblaean Mountains, southeastern Sicily flourishes with its own blend of culture, architecture and heritage — so exceptional is this region, in fact, that it’s home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites! For a full day, you’ll explore wonderful area attractions, starting in Syracuse. An important port city, it has been inhabited for 2,700 years — first by Greeks and then Romans. You’ll see evidence of these influences when you visit Parco Archeologico della Neapolis (Neapolis Archaeological Park) with its Greek theater, Roman amphitheater, stone quarry and rockface burial chambers said to contain the tomb of Archimedes. Continue to the city’s historic center to marvel at a cathedral, Fontana Aretusa and a Baroque-style palazzo. You’re off next to Noto, traversing a countryside of rolling hills and verdant vineyards into this well-known wine region. Then, at a wine estate, you’ll learn about local winemaking processes during a fun — and delicious — tour complete with wine tastings and a light lunch. End the day with a real treat as you tour and taste at the oldest chocolate factory in Sicily, operating for 150 years.

During your stay, you’ll also have some time to discover the delights of Modica at your own pace. You might want to check out UNESCO-protected Sicilian Baroque sights in and around the historic center of Modica, perhaps starting in Alta Modica and working your way down the steep hillside via staircases and alleyways to Modica Bassa. Along the way, keep an eye out for churches like Duomo di San Giorgio and Chiesa di San Pietro, Museo Etnografico — a fascinating folklore museum — and Palazzo De Leva and its 18th-century portal. If you want to venture farther, you can head to one of the most astonishing UNESCO World Heritage sites on the planet, the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica. It features more than 5,000 chamber-style tombs from prehistoric times that are cut into the limestone outcropping as well as other ruins including Anaktoron — a grand palace in 9th and 8th centuries BC — Greek temples and a cave shrine.

What we love:
• Chocolate in Modica dates to the 1500s and follows an Aztec-inspired recipe based on xocolatl, courtesy of the Spanish who ruled over Sicily at the time.
• Considered a symbol of Syracuse and famed for its freshwater papyrus plants, Fontana Aretusa forms the center of a Greek myth in which the goddess Artemis turns the beautiful sea nymph, Arethusa, into a fountain.
• More than 200 steps lead to the impressive Duomo di San Giorgio in Modica Alta, rebuilt in Sicilian Baroque style in 1702 by famous architect Rosario Gagliardi.

Destination

Ravaged by natural disasters over the centuries, Modica has rebuilt itself into one of the most beloved destinations in southeastern Sicily. Today, visitors flock to the city for year-round nice weather, spectacular Baroque architecture, sunny beaches and friendly residents — not to mention the amazing gourmet chocolate for which Modica is known.

The city itself comprises two distinct sections. The medieval part, Modica Alta (Upper Modica), is set on a ridge, while the newer part, Modica Bassa (Lower Modica), sits below it. A third part, the modern suburb of Modica Sorda, is accessible via one of the highest viaducts in Europe, Ponte Guerrieri. Visitors will marvel at the extraordinary collection of UNESCO-protected landmarks found in Modica Alta and Modica Bassa — primarily structures built in the Sicilian Baroque style of architecture after the catastrophic 1693 earthquake.
